On November 30th from 0800-1000: Nurses at the bedside know that staffing levels have reached crisis levels due to burnout, moral injury and hospitals’ failure to take action to retain nurses. But even before the pandemic, so many of us were stretched to the limit, forced to take too many patients and work long shifts without a break.

We need more than a quick fix – we need action to ensure safe staffing now and in the future.

The Cabinet on Economic and General Welfare invites you to join your fellow union nurses across Washington state for WSNA Nurses Unite for Safe Staffing! This free event will be held virtually on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 8 – 10 a.m.

At this event you will:

  • Learn about WSNA’s efforts in coalition with other health care unions to create accountability with enforceable laws and staffing standards every hospital must meet.
  • Find out how you can take action to achieve safe staffing on every unit, in every hospital in Washington state and ensure that hospitals take every available measure to ensure our communities receive the care they deserve.
  • Hear from state and national labor leaders about how they are standing behind Washington nurses in our fight for safe staffing.

Featured speakers

  • Randi Weingarten, American Federation of Teachers (AFT) president, will discuss national labor support for safe staffing.
  • Larry Brown, Washington State Labor Council president, will share how unions in Washington are working together to win safe staffing.
  • April Sims, Washington State Labor Council secretary treasurer, will discuss safe staffing through an equity lens.

Transgender Toolbox: Basic Tools to Provide Optimal Care

Saturday, January 29, 2022 9:00am – 11:30am via Zoom

Research indicates that transgender people, especially people with disabilities and people of color, are at risk for lower mental and physical health outcomes when compared with the general population.

Healthcare professionals work as a team to support diverse patient populations.  It is essential to educate each member of the team in areas of treatment and cultural differences that impact care.  However, studies show that most healthcare providers receive little to no training on transgender health issues.

This presentation will lay a foundation of knowledge, enabling clinicians to leave the session with tools that can be implemented directly into care across the continuum. By achieving a greater competency in transgender health topics, participants will be empowered to advocate for the unique needs of transgender patients that may impact their health outcomes.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

· Explain basic terminology relating to transgender people.·      Identify medical and social issues that may impact healthcare for transgender patients.·      Identify and implement at least 3 strategies to create a safe and therapeutic space for transgender patients.

Who Should Participate: Registered Nurses

Cost:· WSNA Members: No charge. This event has been organized and sponsored by CWRNA and the other WSNA Regions.·      Nonmembers: $45

Registration Deadline: January 24, 2022

After Registration: Participants will receive a Zoom link invitation to the event.

·      Upon evaluation submission, participants will receive a certificate of completion for 2.5 hours that meets the continuing competency requirement for license renewal in Washington State
